Situated in Lavender Hill, an area plagued by gang violence, high unemployment, and deep social issues, the school stands firm against the odds, offering a safe space for students to learn, grow, and dream of a brighter future.
In a community where 40% of residents are unemployed, 60% live on less than R3500 a month, and many families face daily struggles with poverty and violence, Lavender Hill High School provides more than just education. Despite the academic excellence Lavender Hill High continues to achieve, the students face challenges that extend beyond their schoolwork. Many arrive at school hungry, with little to eat at home, making it difficult for them to focus on their studies and perform well in class. According to the school, 160 students do not receive regular meals at home, a reality that is all too common in this under-resourced community.
Recognizing the crucial role nutrition plays in learning and well-being, TBKCo (The Black Koi Company) has partnered with Lavender Hill High to help address this need. Through this partnership, the school provides daily afternoon meals to students, ensuring that those who are most vulnerable don’t have to learn on an empty stomach.
This initiative is a lifeline for many learners. With breakfast provided each morning and a nutritious lunch offered in the afternoon, students are better equipped to focus on their studies, participate in class, and perform to the best of their abilities. By meeting their nutritional needs, TBKCo is helping these young learners overcome one of the biggest barriers to their success.
